Some observers are teasing the marching band from Mississippi Valley State University for inviting Donald Trump to his opening celebration.
The Mean Green Marching System, a group of students from previously black universities, is currently looking for money to attend the event in response to protests from other students who support a senator who some claim has not helped the African American community.
Inside Higher Ed accounts:
Op-eds from The Root and HBCU Sports criticized the choice as an obvious support for Trump when the majority of Black citizens find his election to be less than joyful. Social media has erupted with condemnation, and defence, of the shift.
The Mean Green Marching System Band has” a proud history of standing up for Black history, equity, and justice”, Bishop Talbert Swan, chairman of the Springfield, Mass., unit of the NAACP, posted on X. Accepting a performance at Donald Trump’s political opening on Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a terrible treachery of that legacy, according to the statement.
But people disagree. A dark columnist for the Enterprise-Tocsin, a weekly magazine in Mississippi, argued that skipping the option would be a mistake, calling it an “extraordinary offer”.
Additionally, the school supports its circle.
This is not just a minute of delight for our school, but also for the state of Mississippi as a whole, according to MVSU President Jerryl Briggs in a speech. ” It is an opportunity to showcase our reputation, celebrate our society, and invest in the potential leaders of our society”. Students can participate in a peaceful transition of power while honoring the school’s 75th anniversary and gain visibility abroad.
The group will be able to attend the inauguration through a GoFundMe campaign.
” The total cost of this ancient journey, including travel, lodging, meals, and equipment, is around$ 350, 000. Regardless of financial situation, MVSU is committed to ensuring that every student is attend. The school asks alums, supporters, and the group to support this huge effort, “according to the school’s statement.
As of Wednesday night, the group had raised$ 278, 000.
