Cecilia Sala, an European journalist who was detained in Tehran’s notorious Evin jail on December 12, flew home on Wednesday.
Sala had previously described the circumstances at the jail in telephone calls to her home, claiming that she was compelled to sleep on the floor with a never-expiring light and without a bed.
” See you in Rome”
Her companion, Daniele Ranieri, who is also a blogger, said he had spoken to Sala on the phone following her transfer saying:” She was excited and really happy. I told her: See you in Rome.'”
She arrived at Rome’s Ciampino Airport after on Wednesday.
” I want to express my gratitude to everyone who helped create Cecilia’s gain possible”, said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The 29-year-old worked for the Italian magazine Il Folgio and the podcasting business Chora Media. She had only been in Iran for three days while on a regular journalist visa when she was detained last month and placed in solitary confinement.
Italian authorities detained an Egyptian business.
The timing was deemed to be criminal, as Mohammad Abedini, an Egyptian merchant, was arrested three days prior to Italy’s arrest. Abedini is suspected of providing aircraft parts that the US claims were used in a 2024 strike in Jordan that resulted in the deaths of three US support members.
Sala’s flexibility was” kudos to intense work on political and intelligence stations,” according to a statement from the Roman authorities.
Abedini is apparently still incarcerated in a prison in Milan. The Iranian state has decried his imprisonment as “hostage-taking”.
In recent years, Iran has taken a number of foreign nationals into custody, often on suspicion of spying. This is said by rights organizations as part of a plot by the authorities to sway more power over another nations.
