Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, refuted speculation that the United States may apply pressure to seize Greenland or the Panama Canal, saying Donald Trump‘s remarks were directed at China.
The far-right president, who visited the US president-elect at his Florida residence next weekend, also said she did not expect him to “abandon” Ukraine.
At her annual press conference, Meloni said,” I think I can rule out the possibility that the United States will attempt to forcefully occupy lands that curiosity them.”
She said Trump’s comment were “more of a text to… another big international people”.
Meloni claimed that while Greenland was a valuable source of corporate raw materials, the Panama Canal was essential for international trade.
Both of these are areas where we have seen a rise in Taiwanese influence in recent years,” she said.
Trump, who he has claimed he wants the United States to command, refused on Tuesday to forbid military intervention in the Panama Canal and Greenland.
” We need Greenland for national security reasons”, he declared.
Greenland is an mineral- and oil-rich Arctic area, an automatic province of European Union part Denmark that itself has gaze on democracy.
Meloni said she would like to go Trump’s inauguration on January 20 but was still considering the proposal, so she declined to say whether she would.
The prime minister even stated that she did not anticipate Trump leaving Kyiv, despite being a staunch follower of Ukraine’s involvement in its conflict with Russia.
” Simply I don’t envision a disengagement”, she said, adding that Trump” said precisely because we want peace, we will not leave Ukraine”.
