Questions arose after Kamala Harris plan emails sent to U. Wisconsin individuals in the slide.
Through public records requests, The College Fix just obtained more than 60, 000 college kids ‘ contact info from two people Wisconsin institutions.
The University of Wisconsin’s Madison and Whitewater schools sent large files via email within two days of the request, which The Fix had to inquire.
The papers included individuals ‘ names, addresses, school letters, degrees, and, in some cases, their private telephone numbers.
After students inquired about Kamala Harris strategy messages that appeared to have been distributed campus-wide in October, The Fix obtained the files.
” How did they find my email”? one pupil, a freshman who planned to voting for Donald Trump, told The Fix , at the time. Similar queries were raised earlier this fall when Harris ‘ campaign texted 700,000 Arizona State University students.
No one who requested a student directory data request in 2023 or 2024 ( to-date ) identified themselves as being directly connected to the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris or any other prominent national political figure, according to Greg Bump, a UW-Madison spokesman, The Fix.
He added, however, that they wouldn’t be required to state their identities as for.
” Librarianship of scholar listing details are required to give a name, telephone number, and email address. They are not required to mention the purpose they are requesting this data or give the name of the business to which they may relate, according to Bump in a new email.
The Harris-Walz plan sent bulk emails to UW-Madison and UW-Whitewater pupils in October ahead of the national vote, The Fix reported. The information promoted a concert and march at the Madison school as well as former US president Barack Obama’s attend.

David Cuillier, chairman of the Joseph L. Brechner Freedom of Information Project at the University of Florida, told The Fix that index knowledge, in general, is people under the national Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
Being out there is usually not regarded as an invasion of privacy when looking at it from the legitimate view and common practice across the country, he said via email.
The information released must be really uncomfortable and have no legitimate purpose, he said, in order for it to violate people’s privacy.
Cuillier said he thinks people should be able to get this information.
” There is a goal for individuals to have basic index information, including person’s constitutional right to receive knowledge. We don’t take away people’s basic British right to get information that may actually end up helping them”, he said.
He told The Fix,” If someone is truly worried about people knowing that simple registry information, then they can simply request the school to keep their info private.”
A small portion of learners on UW-Whitewater’s record were listed as “high school”, and appear to be taking lessons through the first school payment plan.
When asked about small pupils ‘ health,  , Cuillier told The Fix that the “directory data piece of FERPA applies to K-12, as well”.
Parents can ask the university, as well as their school district, to keep that information a secret for their minors, he said.
According to Bump at UW-Madison, the university adheres to Wisconsin Public Records Law and federal law governing student directory information.
As part of UW-Madison’s orientation program,” students are informed of these laws and their ability to restrict some or all their directory information from being released”, he said.
He said 2, 169 of the 52, 328 students enrolled for the fall 2024 term “elected to restrict the release of some or all of their directory information”.
Bump continued, noting that the Office of the Registrar handles requests for student directory data and that they had received 470 requests as of December 18th.
” Of those requests for which submitters did provide an affiliated organization, a significant portion came from individuals affiliated with the university ( students, departments, etc. ), student organizations, and local businesses that market to students ( including property management companies )”, he told The Fix.
According to the U.S. Department of Education’s website, “FERPA defines directory information as information contained in a student’s education record that is generally not regarded as harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed.”
A school “may disclose “directory information” to third parties without getting their permission if it has publicly defined what it believes directory information, parents ‘ and students ‘ rights to opt-out of the disclosure of directory information, and the deadline for parents or students to do so, according to the department.
The Fix also reached out to UW-Whitewater, the U. S. Department of Education, the Badger Institute, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Institution by email for comments on the availability of students ‘ contact information, but none of them replied.
Additionally, The Fix twice sent an email to Wisconsin State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos ‘ office within the last two weeks. His office said he was unavailable for comment when contacted by phone this week.
