Donald Trump’s presidential campaign responded to the US Supreme Court’s decision on Thursday to block his request to end the legal proceedings involving his case involving the New York quiet money, allowing the sentencing hearing to remain on Friday.
The judge’s short handwritten get indicated that Trump’s concerns may be addressed through regular appeal procedures. The prosecutor noted that Trump has a low sentencing problem because he has no jail time.
Trump criticized the Supreme Court’s decision, saying both the selection and the court system was politically motivated while still believing in the possibility of righteousness.
Trump remarked on Truth Social:” I appreciate the time and effort of the United States Supreme Court in trying to redress the enormous injustice done to me by the very conflicted’Acting Justice,’ who should not have been allowed to try this situation. Every legitimate professor stated, firmly, that this is a situation that should never have been brought. There was no legal action against me. In other words, I am stupid of all of the Judge’s made up, false claims. Nothing about this was used against a democratic opposition by the justice system.
He continued,” It’s called lawfare, and nothing like this has ever happened in the United States of America, and it should never be allowed to happen again. My First Amendment right to speak about quite significant issues of the case has been removed by this very political and crooked Judge, who continues to put me on gag orders. For the purpose and purity of the Presidency, I will be appealing this circumstance, and am convinced that justice may prevail”.
Four liberal justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh supported Trump’s delay ask.
But, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, both liberals, joined the court’s three liberal judges in rejecting the president-elect’s charge. Barrett, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, were appointed to the Supreme Court by Trump.
Trump, who is expected to take business on January 20, requested urgently that his punishment be postponed on Wednesday.
Following his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in May, Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in Manhattan on Friday at 9:30 am ( 1430 GMT ), according to AFP.
The 78-year-old president-elect’s legal team argued that the punishment delay was necessary” to stop grave injustice and damage to the organization of the president and the federal government’s operations.”
Trump was found guilty in May 2023 of fabricating business records to conceal payments made to Michael Cohen, his former attorney, who had paid Stormy Daniels a sum of$ 130,000 in hush money.
The pay was intended to prevent her from revealing her story about an alleged relationship with Trump ahead of the 2016 presidential election, which Trump has persistently denied.
