According to the New York Post, a well-known influencer’s indifferent statement about the Los Angeles fires, which have already claimed at least five livelihoods and forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes, has sparked widespread outcry.
Meg DeAngelis, 29, a Canadian content creator with millions of followers on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, faced backlash for a selfie she posted on Wednesday.
In the image, she is pouting, and she wrote alongside it:” When I escaped NYC because it was too cool, but now this one is actually burning over”.
The” joke” didn’t sit well with her followers, who quickly called her out as” tone-deaf” and “privileged” on Reddit. One person commented,” The pleasure is crazy”, while another added,” OMG child, read the room”.
Another comments condemned her indifference, pointing out the devastating effects the flames have had on person’s lives. ” New York was very cold, and then LA is very “hot” due to the deaths of thousands of homes. one man wrote. Another person criticised her lack of awareness, saying,” If you don’t have useful information for people in this ongoing issue, why are you posting”?
Following the reaction, DeAngelis back-pedalled in a follow-up post, sharing a more serious pictures of the orange horizon in California. ” In all seriousness, this is heartbreaking”, she wrote. I’m thinking about everyone who has been impacted, including the animals. I’m thus sad you had to go through this.
The criticism comes after a stunning image of a group of young people, reportedly celebrities, posing for photographs near burning houses in Pasadena. The party, seen smiling next to the Eaton fire, sparked more indignation online, with remarks describing their behavior as “gross” and” stupid”.
As more than 180 000 individuals continue to burn in Los Angeles, around 180 000 have been ordered to leave. After a fire broke out through the Pacific Palisades, a portion of Sunset Boulevard’s classic structure has been destroyed. Officials are still attempting to determine the total number of deaths and the damage’s level.
