Pope Francis was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Saturday, President Joe Biden said the pope was” a lighting of faith, hope, and enjoy that shines beautifully across the world,” in line with Biden’s highest civilian honor.
In order to complete his last overseas trip of his administration, Biden had planned to give the prize to the bishop in individual on Saturday in Rome, but he had to cancel his travel plans so he could follow the wildfires in California.
Biden and Biden exchanged phone calls where they also discussed efforts to promote peace and relieve suffering around the world.
It’s the only day Biden has honored the honor with difference while in office. Barack Obama, the then-president, recognized Biden as a victim of the prize with contrast when he was vice president in a surprise ceremony eight years ago. That was the only period in Obama’s two words when he gave that type of the award.
