Special counsel who led Trump prosecutions leaves US Justice department

WASHINGTON: Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed to evaluate Donald Trump for his alleged efforts to reject results of the 2020 election, has left the US Department of Justice, lawyers said Saturday in a court filing.
According to officers,” The Unique Counsel finished his work and submitted his last personal statement on January 7, 2025, and left the Department on January 10,” according to the file that was sent to US District Judge Aileen Cannon, urging her to refuse to extend her request last year, which prevented Smith’s transfer.”
As she considers whether to keep a hold on the particular attorney’s statement on two instances: Trump’s role in the January 6, 2020 rebellion at the US Capitol and the situation of Trump withholding of classified documents after he left the White House, the declaration on Smith was a note in the registration to Cannon.
The protracted legal battle over the document on Trump-related cases is coming down to about a year before he is formally proclaimed as America’s 47th leader on January 20 as his successor, with Cannon considering an improvement and the hold expected to disappear in the upcoming days.
Trump made the suggestion in a late-night post on his Truth Social platform that Smith had been fired by the Department of Justice.
” He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over$ 100, 000, 000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed”! he wrote.
Smith had accused Trump of conspiring to defraud the United States and conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding, the congressional session held to recognize Biden’s victory, which was brutally attacked on January 6 by a mob of the Republican leader’s supporters.
Smith dropped the cases against Trump after he won November’s presidential election.
The Justice Department announced this week that Garland plans to make the findings public after the special counsel completed his confidential report to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on January 7.
According to department officials, Cannon does not have the authority to appoint Smith’s attorney general to release the report.
