The size of the damage and carnage in California is difficult to comprehend, but there are bright places of courage amidst the death, damage, and horror. One of those is Chemster Griffiths. According to the UK Telegraph, this 62-year-old Los Angeles head surgeon quietly finished a operation, drove to his seaside house, and saved homes on his Malibu cul-de-sac from the blazing inferno.

Thomas, unlike California government, had long been prepared for a great fire. He had done education, he had worked out a schedule with his brother and cousin, and he had sourced fireplace tubes. The physician was at this point prepared to take action.
What came next was a brave vision by the three men to save six homes in their lovely cul-de-sac from the worst inferno in city history while the surrounding buildings sat in a jumble of rubble and ash.
Yet as 80mph hurricane-level winds brought plates of ashes the size of ball raining down, they continued to fight.
Before making his decision to stay, Clayton Colbert had a moment of hesitation because Thomas was staying to battle for his home. He told the Telegraph,” At one point, I started packing up my car before I only decided I’m not going to let my property burn over, no matter what.”
The guys used shovels and fire hose to prevent the fire from ravaging their homes for five times and four weeks while wearing N95 masks.

While aiming his line at a nearby burned home, Colbert ( who missed his liver operation while keeping flames and criminals at sea ) stated emphatically,” Without a doubt, if we weren’t here, none of our homes would be. There’s not even a 1 per cent chance”.
The men had their diciest moment on Wednesday night when a fire from the west barreled toward them, engulfing two of their neighbors ‘ wooden homes and igniting them within 20 minutes.
The inferno caused eucalyptus trees to explode, so we first left the house two doors further along from Dr. Griffiths on Topanga Beach Drive. The trio then jumped on nearby roofs, sprayed the flames, and used dirt and sand to extinguish any fires on the ground before the next one “like a Roman candle.” They were repeatedly blown over by the 80-mph winds, buckling.
Griffiths said,” Everything was coming this way. The fire was coming this way, the smoke, the embers in the air, the wind was unbelievable. …Softball-sized pieces on fire were landing around us, it was almost apocalyptic. It’s like, you see these things coming at you, and they land on the ground. Thank God, the majority will not go on the house, but the ones that do, you put out immediately. However, if no one is present, they eventually burn the house down.
But, according to him, he wasn’t scared. ” I’m a surgeon”, he explained. ” You train and you prepare, and then when you’re in the thick of it, you rely on your training and your preparedness. We set out with paddle boards out into the ocean as our last resort. We were aware that we could simply remove them if something did go wrong. There was no time to be scared”.

Griffiths and Colbert, whose hair caught fire at one point, worked to save others ‘ houses as well as their own. ” We were only able to do this because we’re a tight-knit community”, Griffiths said, expressing his hope that other people will learn to build , relationships with their neighbors.
Even amidst the most hellish nightmares, the American spirit shines undaunted. Dr. Griffiths and his son and neighbor , are truly champions and warriors.
