According to a CNN statement, the US Supreme Court will hear a case involving Texas ‘ age verification laws, which places limitations on exposure to adult sites on Wednesday.
The case, brought by the adult entertainment industry, challenges the rules on constitutional basis, arguing it violates privacy rights and freedom of speech.
In 2023, a provincial judge struck it down, citing concerns that it would intrude on individual privacy. The Fifth Circuit appeals court, but, affirmed that Texas ‘ rules was legitimate because it sought to shield children from unambiguous information.
Many states have passed age verification laws over the past two and a half years, according to CNN, which are supported by conservative organizations, including those connected to Project 2025, a plan blueprint in anticipation of Trump’s second term.
As a result of these laws, some significant adult sites, including Pornhub, have blocked consumers from particular states more than having to pay for the high cost of implementing ID-checking services.
The law’s supporters claim it’s a step in the right direction to protect children, but critics claim it places a lot of pressure on adult users ‘ privacy and could cause free speech to decline.
As people in the affected states look for ways to get around the restrictions, the use of virtual private networks (VPNs ) has increased in response to the new laws.
While some child platforms, like Pornhub, have expressed their desire to protect adolescents, they even argue for other options, such as parental controls and integrated time validation within operating systems, reported CNN.
