Justin Trudeau, the incoming Canadian prime minister, is using his last days in business to words his concerns about former US President Donald Trump‘s comments about making Canada the “51st state.” Speaking to MSNBC’s Jen Psaki in a wide-ranging meeting on Sunday, Trudeau revealed details of a talk with Trump during a meeting at Mar-a-Lago in November.
” It really sort of came up at one place”, Trudeau said, referring to Trump’s earlier remarks about annexing Canada. We began to ponder this back and forth. And when I casually suggested we may deal for Vermont or California, he didn’t find it amusing again. The talk fast shifted”.
Trudeau dismissed the notion openly, emphasizing Canada’s autonomy. ” That’s not going to happen. According to him, Canadians are “incredibly delighted to be Canadian,” adding that discussions secluded other pressing industry issues, such as Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Canadian exports.
Trump has consistently made provocative remarks about Canada, including calling it the “51st state,” calling Trudeau its “governor,” and also suggesting NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a potential candidate for prime minister.
A ‘ strong response’ to price threats
In the meeting, Trudeau shifted the focus to Trump’s monetary policies, caution of significant repercussions if tariffs on Canadian products are implemented. ” If he does decide to go forward with taxes that raise prices for American people, we will have to answer robustly”, Trudeau stated.
Trudeau urged officials to solve real problems rather than entertain fantasy-like situations, even though his language frequently veered into the speculative, including previous remarks about purchasing Greenland and reclaiming the Panama Canal.
Although Trudeau’s abrupt departure this week has sparked rumors about his political potential, his strong criticism of Trump’s proposals suggests he isn’t afraid to leave a lasting legacy.
Trump, however, has not ruled out extraordinary measures regarding other regional dreams, saying during a recent Mar-a-Lago hit event,” The Panama Canal is vital to our country. For the purposes of regional security, we require Greenland.
