Despite a trial for indicting him and an investigation into his infamous military law declaration, official documents revealed on Monday that South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will still get a set pay raise despite this revelation.
Yoon lifted human law on December 3, causing men to enter legislature, plunging South Korea into its worst political turmoil in a generation. Days later, he was forced to reverse.
He has been impeached by politicians and is awaiting a last Constitutional Court ruling before being removed from office. Additionally, he is facing an uprising investigation and being detained for questioning by authorities.
But, Yoon was given a lift, as per the 2025 civil servant income table, even though he continues to be imprisoned in the presidential home while using his security detail to avoid arrest.
The document from the Ministry of Personnel Management, seen by AFP on Monday, indicates Yoon’s salary will rise to 262.6 million won ($ 178, 400 ), a three per cent raise compared with last year.
Yoon will still be able to get his salary and security benefits because the Constitutional Court is only allowed to deliberate his impeachment motion while he is still in office.
His successor as acting president, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who was himself impeached and is now suspended from workplace, will also get a salary increase of three per cent to 203.5 million ($ 138, 350 ).
” It makes my blood boil. He’s ( Yoon ) getting paid for doing nothing”, one user wrote in a post on social media platform X that quickly went viral.
Following a anxious, hour-long conflict this month, Yoon’s national guard product thwarted an attempt to arrest him and he has refused to meet with prosecution and investigators looking into his declaration of martial law.
Investigators are working on a second arrest effort.
Since the start of the crisis, rival protests for and against Yoon have been held almost everyday in the South Korean money.
