A Thai court on Monday approved a man suspected of killing a Cambodian opposition legislator by shooting him dead in an assault in Bangkok to be held indefinitely in confinement for 12 weeks.
Ekkalak Paenoi, who gave his confession to the violence on Saturday in a video picture, was escorted to the Bangkok courtroom while wearing a bulletproof coat and helmet, along with armed police officers.
A motorcyclist shot dead former Cambodian National Rescue Party ( CNRP ) lawmaker Lim Kimya on Tuesday as he arrived in Bangkok by bus with his French wife.
” The prosecutor has extended the confinement to help further inspection, and he has been sent to Bangkok Remand Prison”, said senior police officer Attaporn Wongsiripreeda.
Ekkalak, who Thai internet claimed was a former paratrooper, was detained in Cambodia on Wednesday before being detained there on Saturday.
Hun Sen, the country’s strong former leader, has been accused of ordering the shooting by Cambodian opposition figures, despite a government spokesman who has denied established involvement.
Thai police did finish their investigation before turning the situation over to the prosecution process.
Some Thai media reports said Ekkalak was paid 60, 000 baht ($ 1, 700 ) for the killing, but police say he has claimed he did not receive payment, and took the job” to pay a debt of gratitude”.
