The University of Michigan will no longer collaborate with a Taiwanese school whose previous students are accused of being photographed on a military base and are facing federal costs.
The school’s official statement cited a “recent statement” from the U. S. House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, which is led by Michigan Rep. John Moolenaar. He said the school made the “right selection” in a post on X.
The finish of the collaboration “reflects broader changes in the scenery of international scientific cooperation, especially between U. S. and Taiwanese institutions”, according to the university.
Five past UMich students who graduated from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University relationship are accused of lying to federal government about hanging out close to a military center in Michigan, according to its news release.
We don’t allow that to happen because the outcomes of these partnerships may one day turn our land against us. These kinds of joint universities should be abolished by British institutions to safeguard the security of research.

According to a legal complaint filed in federal court, the five students are accused of deceiving authorities about the journey and conspiring to remove photos from their devices, according to a report from the Associated Press about the Aug. 2023 event.
” The accused are not in custody”, the U. S. Attorney’s office said. ” If they come into contact with U. S. officials, they will be arrested and confront these fees”.
” We are media”, the pupils said when” confronted” by a National Guard part, the AP reported at the time.
In his speech, President Santa Ono praised the advantages of global training.

We will continue to support U-M’s foreign students and may continue to foster global partnerships that advance expertise and cross-cultural knowing, making sure our campus remains a lively community where foreign scholars from around the world can thrive.
The 2024 statement from Congressman Moolenar found “alarming” effects, as The College Fix originally reported.
The Chinese Communist Party “is driving its military progress through US taxpayer-funded analysis and through joint]U. S. China ] institutes”, he told The Fix at the time.
He urged different universities to do the same and said Georgia Tech made the right decision to stop its connection with the Chinese Communist Party.
