On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives approved regulations that would forbid federal funding for K-12 institutions that allow transgender kids to play for women’s sports teams. The Senate would need the support of seven Democrats in order to avoid a filibuster, so the bill, which was generally along party lines with a ballot of 218-206, faces a major challenge.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which prohibits people from competing in women’s athletics, was passed by House Republicans, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson, who praised the country.
” Today is a great time in America because House Republicans merely passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which prohibits people from competing in women’s activities,” said Rep. Greg Steube. Men are men, women are women, and men don’t get girls. It’s just that straightforward”, Johnson said in a blog on X.
Republicans contend that the bill must protect women’s rights and guarantee equal playing fields for female sports. Official Greg Steube, the bill’s sponsor, said,” The enormous bulk believe people don’t belong in women’s sports. This act may fulfill the promise that Congress was given by the British people.
Democrats, however, criticized the bill as a risky invasion of privacy for young girls and an illustration of Republicans ‘” creepy obsession with your kids ‘ private parts,” according to representative Jim McGovern. Additionally, they pointed out that the policy is targeted at a little and underserved group of transgender children who are already at higher risk of bullying and mental health issues.
Official Lori Trahan, the only original department I school performer from the past two years serving in Congress, acknowledged genuine concerns about trans athletes competing in women’s sports at the highest levels but questioned the political commitment to the problem.
The fact that Republicans believe the issue continues to be socially beneficial suggests that the decision to bring up the costs in the second year of Congress. The Trump campaign spent a sizable part of its advertising budget on television ads that addressed trans issues during the presidential election season of 2024.
Democrats spent more time expressing concerns about the potential intrusiveness of the bill, which they claimed was cause aggressive body-checks. Representative Katherine M. Clark said,” This doesn’t defend a woman’s right, it eliminates them. Every woman and every young person who chooses to play sporting is on the back of a target.
Revisions of birth certificates would be sufficient, according to Republicans, while Democrats argued that this approach may be uncertain because of the existence of transgender individuals.
Two Democrats, members Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, voted in favor of the bill, while official Don Davis of North Carolina voted “present”.
A federal prosecutor in Kentucky last year upheld US President Joe Biden‘s plan to make changes to the laws governing sex discrimination in schools and expand protections for trans kids.
