Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada is introducing new measures designed to enhance the stability of its momentary native courses while keeping them in line with the nation’s economic and labor market interests. The Canadian government made changes to its Family Open Work Permits ( FWOPs ) in a notice released on Tuesday, effective January 21.
Families of foreign employees or students from other countries could use the FWOPS to find work with any organization in Canada. They may work for any company across the country without limits, if they fulfilled specific terms and conditions.

Eligibility for Spouses of International Students
Only spouses of international students enrolled in specific programs will be eligible for family open work permits ( OWPs ) starting January 21. These include individuals in master’s plans lasting 16 months or longer, doctoral applications, and find professional or available programs.
Eligibility for families of foreigners
Similar to this, spouses of foreign employees will only be available for an OWP if the employee is employed in TEER 0 or 1 professions or in some TEER 2 or 3 professions in sectors with labor shortages or authorities priorities. These industries include biological and applied sciences, design, care, training, and more. The authorities stated in its observe that the entire list of available occupations may be made obtainable on January 21, 2025. Also, when their spouse submits an OWP application, the foreign employee must have at least 16 months left on their work force. Dependent children of foreign staff will no longer be eligible for home OWPs.
Effects on existing allows
OWPs approved under past actions will continue to be effective until the date of expiration. In-Canada community members ( including families and dependent children ) can use to maintain their job permits when students or employees require longer to complete their plans or when family members have received a shorter labor permit than the principal person. The registration application had, nevertheless, meet the exact requirements as the original work force, and the requested length must be in line with the main individual’s study or work permit.
Exceptions
Families of workers covered under free-trade contracts, as well as those transitioning to everlasting citizenship, will not be impacted by the new adjustments.
