On Friday, US President Joe Biden commuted the words of roughly 2,500 peaceful drug offenders, setting a report for the most unique pardons and commutations a president has ever issued. According to Biden, the move aims to stop “disproportionately much sentences” that would otherwise be given to people in recent law, policy, and exercise.

This is a significant step in the direction of correcting historical injustices and allowing deserving citizens to re-enter their societies after spending far too much time in jail.
According to Biden, the clemency activity provides relief to those who have been served long sentences due to outdated drug offense sentencing enhancements and discredited distinctions between break and powder cocaine.
” Yesterday’s clemency action alleviates the suffering of those who have been given long words based on discredited similarities between crack and powder methamphetamine, as well as outdated sentencing enhancements for drug crimes,” says the clemency activity. He continued,” This is a significant step in the direction of righting historical wrongs, correcting sentencing differences, and giving deserving citizens the opportunity to re-enter their families and communities after spending way too much time behind pubs.”
Although Biden said he would continue to examine further cases before President-elect Donald Trump‘s inauguration on Monday, the White House did not give the names of those whose names had been compromised.
The White House fears that Trump’s administration may use unfair language when it considers granting wide pardons to authorities and allies.
Response to Biden’s selection
Shaneva D McReynolds, president of families against mandatory minimums ( FAMM), praised Biden’s action, saying he “is leaving office with a lasting legacy on criminal justice reform”.
” With today’s news, he has set a standard for political mercy and addressed decades-long hardships in our legal fairness system”, McReynolds said.
Sarah Gersten, executive producer and general guidance of the Last Prisoner Project, said Biden’s walk “offers hope” for all those detained for hemp and their families who have been impacted by the War on Drugs.
Earlier clemency actions
The announcement comes in the wake of Biden’s pardon of 39 Americans who were found guilty of violent crimes and his commutation of roughly 1,500 sentences last month. Also, the president commuted the words of 37 out of 40 people on national suicide column, converting their consequences to life imprisonment. Along with his son Hunter, who is feared that Trump allies may bring additional charges against him, he lately granted him a large pardon that includes both his federal gun and tax convictions and any possible federal offenses committed over an 11-year period.
