Authorities in El Cajon, California, postponed a vote on a capital resolution giving local officials more flexibility to support President-elect Donald Trump’s promised efforts to arrest illegal immigrants.  ,
After some occupants expressed concern about the plan during a town council meeting this month, city employees are rewriting the language on the quality.
In order to help Trump and his “border czar,” Tom Homan, as they prepare to eliminate illegal refugees from the country, especially those who have committed violent acts, Bill Wells, the state’s Democratic governor, spearheaded the initiative. Senate Bill 54, a 2017 California law, which limits the scope of state and local law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with federal immigration government, is the subject of the solution.
However, some people, among them Sergio Conti, expressed concern that the walk had “destroy the existence of several families that only want to work in harmony and provide a future to their kids”.
The discussion takes place as governor. Attorney General Rob Bonta warned that his office would” step in” if state and local law enforcement organizations violate SB 54 while Governor Newsom’s (D-CA ) administration has pledged to oppose Trump’s deportation attempt.
Graham Mitchell, the area manager for El Cajon, claimed on Tuesday that the resolution was necessary to allow local law enforcement to collaborate with federal authorities to eliminate illegal immigrants who have been found guilty of violent felonies.  ,
One of the issues that the city government raised was that the federal government is currently requesting assistance with immigration enforcement, particularly for those who are legally located in the United States but are not here legally, have been found guilty of a harsh criminal, and are free to roam around, Mitchell said.  ,” And but there’s a problem about routing our society of those people, and thus far in California, nearby government companies are not allowed to help in that work”.
Wells recently made a comment to a nearby news channel that said local police could face legal retribution if they cooperated with national law enforcement’s crackdown on illegal immigration.  ,  ,
The federal government has warned that if we don’t engage, we could face legal action. Our police officials are being prosecuted if they cooperate with the federal government, according to the state govt. These are issues we ought to understand. We should have this all worked out”, he said.  ,
Last year, Wells told journalist Nick Shirley,” In California, we’re not allowed to have any communication with ICE or with the border patrol at all” . ,
We don’t tell ICE that someone was being detained if we were to make an arrest for a crime, perhaps if we knew. In reality, we’re not yet allowed to ask them”, he said.  ,
But, Pedro Rios, the regional director of the American Friends Service Committee’s U. S. Mexico Border Program, argued Wells’s solution is rooted in a lighter plan.  ,
According to him,” It is driven by an anti-immigrant passion that is concerning for people in El Cajon who may fear that the police will immediately be after them and asking them for documents,” he told CBS 8.  ,
Wells has rebuffed the accusation.  ,
” This is not about turning our police force into Border Patrol agents,” he said. It’s about working with the federal government and upholding the law, he said. ” The intention is not to arrest our police force and have them arrest people,” he said. That’s not the intention at all”.
El Cajon, which is just a few miles from the border, is east of downtown San Diego and has more than 100, 000 residents. In 2022, 28.7 % of the city’s residents were noncitizens.  ,
According to El Cajon’s resolution, the city “mains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of its residents, especially those who are most vulnerable to criminal activities like human trafficking and drug distribution.”

Additionally, it “declares its intention to assist federal immigration authorities in their enforcement efforts as much as possible” under SB 54, the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. S Constitution, and other applicable laws to remove those who pose a threat to our community’s public safety.
According to the resolution, the city would ask Bonta’s office for clarification and advice regarding the legal requirements for cooperating with federal immigration authorities under SB 54 and potential conflicts with federal law.
