Pakistan’s largest airport, funded and constructed by China in the restive Balochistan province, officially became operational on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor ( CPEC ) initiative.
Opening festival
The annual meeting at Gwadar International Airport witnessed the appearance of a Pakistan International Airlines flight from Karachi. Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif and Chinese officials were present, celebrating the$ 230 million project, which has a capacity to handle 400,000 people annually.
The occasion followed the online opening of the aircraft earlier this year by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Economic and corporate value
Built under Foreign President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative ( BRI), the aircraft aims to boost trade and recruit foreign investment. It complements the deep-sea harbor in Gwadar, positioning the seaside town as a vital regional business hub.
“The airport may play a vital part in improving the economy, fostering foreign investment, and bringing happiness to Balochistan, ” Asif stated during the meeting.
The aircraft, spanning 4,300 acres, you hold several aircraft, including ATR 72, Airbus A-300, and Boeing 747, for both domestic and international roads, according to the Ministry of Planning and Development.
Problems in Balochistan
The project’s implementation faced difficulties due to increased problems by separatists in Balochistan, who oppose Chinese opportunities and accuse them of financial abuse. The area has long been plagued by an insurrection demanding greater autonomy or freedom.
Tribal Baloch groups have criticized the development tasks, claiming they benefit newcomers while leaving nearby communities marginalized.

Despite the challenges, Gwadar International Airport symbolizes deeper Pakistan-China relations and reflects China ’s corporate interest in the region.
