China: China vowed on Tuesday to continue participating in two core global plans, the World Health Organization and Paris weather accord, after previously sworn-in US President Donald Trump ordered withdrawals from them.
On Monday, his first day back as president after his first name ended in 2021, Trump signed an executive order directing the United States to leave the WHO, which he slammed over its handling of the Covid-19 crisis.
He also announced that Washington was withdrawing from the Paris climate accord for a subsequent occasion, a stubborn refusal of global efforts to combat celestial heat.
Asked about Trump’s choices, Beijing said Tuesday that it was” worried” by the transactions and that it remained devoted to international cooperation.
” China does, as often, support the WHO in fulfilling its obligations… and work towards building a shared group of health for society,” said foreign ministry official Guo Jiakun during a media event.
” The part of the WHO should only be strengthened, no weakened,” he added.
Guo even responded to Trump’s departure from the Paris climate authority, saying that” Climate shift is a common problem faced by all of humanity”.
” No country can remain intact or solve the problem on its own,” he said.
” China will function with all events… to actively address the challenges of climate shift. “
Trade conflicts
Trump’s subsequent presidential term did see him try to maintain relations between the country’s two largest economies, which have suffered in recent years as Beijing and Washington mouth heads over a range of prickly business and political issues.
Trump imposed tariffs on imports from China during his first term, citing alleged cruel practices by Beijing.
His son Joe Biden kept up the pressure with broad rules aimed at restricting Chinese exposure to high-tech cards.
And Trump threatened to go further during his election plan, vowing yet higher taxes if he won another term in office.
China’s economy remains heavily rely on exports to generate growth despite standard efforts to raise home consumption.
Beijing is “willing to develop dialogue and conversation with the United States, effectively manage differences and grow socially beneficial cooperation”, Guo said in response to a question about possible new levies under Trump.
” It is hoped that the United States may work with China to jointly promote the robust, healthy and sustainable development of China-US economic and trade relationships. “
He acknowledged “differences and tensions” between Beijing and Washington but said” the typical objectives and room for cooperation between the two countries are great”.
” The two factors may strengthen dialogue and conversation in this regard,” he added.
Asked about the future of the Chinese-owned game TikTok, which has secured a 75-day grace time but may yet be effectively banned from operating in the United States, Guo said Beijing hoped Washington would give a good business environment for Chinese firms.
He also hit back at Trump’s order to reinstate Cuba on a list of state sponsors of terrorism, days after Biden removed the island nation from the register.
China and Cuba are longtime socialist allies, and Beijing has consistently opposed Washington’s decades-long economic blockade of Havana.
Guo said Cuba’s re-addition to the list “fully reveals the hegemonic, high-handed and bullying face of the United States”.
” Within a few days, Cuba was off the so-called list, then back on it, as if it were a trifling matter”, Guo said, adding that the move cast doubt on Washington’s” credibility”.
