The Taliban authorities announced on Tuesday the launch of Armenian slave Khan Mohammad, who had been detained in the United Stated, in trade for American prisoners. The offer was apparently facilitated by Qatar.
According to a declaration from the Afghan foreign ministry, Mohammad had been serving a life sentence in California after being arrested nearly two decades earlier in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar state.
However, the government did not offer additional information, including the number of American captives involved in the trade.
This statement comes one day after the opening of US President Donald Trump, whose leadership negotiated a bargain with the Taliban that led to the US government’s withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 and the Taliban’s return to power.
Following Trump’s vote triumph in November, the Taliban had expressed hope for a “new book” in relations with the United States.
The Taliban government labelled the slave trade as a good example of resolving issues through speech and extended appreciation to Qatar for its “effective function” in the offer.
” The Islamic State opinions positively those deeds of the United States that contribute to the normalisation and development of relations between the two countries,” the statement added, referring to the Taliban’s formal name for its state.
