Pete Hegseth appears to be on the cusp of assurance as secretary of defense, but Democrats are gearing up for a fierce fight to stop it. If you thought the Democrats ’ smear strategies against Justice Brett Kavanaugh were a thing of the past, think afterwards; they’re dusting off the same old handbook to undermine Hegseth’s election.

On Tuesday, senators received an oath from Hegseth’s past sister-in-law, alleging conduct that apparently made his second wife concern for her security.
The original sister-in-law, Danielle Hegseth, submitted the petition in response to a Jan. 18 text from Sen. Jack Reed, D-R. I. , seeking “a speech attesting to your specific information about Mr. Hegseth’s exercise to occupy this critical position. ”
Reed, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, asked Danielle Hegseth to detail what she knew of “instances of abuse, or dangers of abuse, perpetrated against any other man ” and “mistreatment of a spouse, former partner, or other members of his family, ” among other demands.
Reed said in a speech Tuesday, “As I have said for decades, the accounts of Mr. Hegseth’s record of alleged sexual abuse, alcohol abuse, and open misconduct involve an exhaustive history analysis. I have been concerned that the background test procedure has been limited, and this sworn affidavit confirms that point. “
There’s only one more major problem with this past sister-in-law’s accusations: Hegseth’s ex-wife says they’re not correct.

Samantha Deering, Hegseth’s ex-wife, told NBC News, which first reported on the complaints, that the claims were false.
“First and all, I have not and will not reply on my relationship to Pete Hegseth. I do not have representatives speaking on my behalf, nor have I ever asked people to communicate or talk about the details of my wedding on my representative, whether it be a writer, a council member, a transition team member, etc. , ” she wrote.
“ I do not believe your information to be correct, and I have cc’d my solicitor, ” she added.

In response to a follow-up from NBC News to understand, she said, “There was no real abuse in my relationship. This is the only further speech I may make to you, I have let you know that I am not speaking and will not talk on my relationship to Pete. Please regard this choice. ”
