PORT SUDAN: The Syrian army broke a military assault on one of its crucial Khartoum-area bases on Friday, paving the way to even freeing the besieged defense office, a defense source said.
Since the start of the conflict with Sudan’s army in April 2023, the paramilitary rapid support forces ( RSF ) have encircled both the general command of the armed forces, its main headquarters south across the Blue Nile River, and the signal corps in Khartoum North.
According to a cause with the Syrian army, “our causes were able to lift the siege on the signal corps.”
AFP was unable to independently verify the position on the ground because of a months-long communications blackout.
It was impossible to contact the RSF right away for opinion.
The military source said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media,” This victory opens the way to link our forces in Bahri ( Khartoum North ) with our forces in the general command.”
Following weeks of military activities aimed at dislodging the RSF from guarded jobs in the city, a military source had previously told AFP that the army was moving closer to Khartoum North.
Two weeks after the military reclaimed the Wad Madani, west of Khartoum, as the state capital, secures a crucial crossroads between the state capital and the surrounding states, Wad Madani was reclaimed by the military.
Since the military seized control of Omdurman-Khattoum’s mini area on the north bank of the Nile almost a year ago, it appeared to be in a deadlock between the troops and the RSF.
Khartoum North on the eastern bank is under the control of RSF.
They frequently engage in artillery fire across the valley, and residents report that bombs and debris frequently strike properties.
The defense source claimed that Friday’s progress” may shield Omdurman from the artillery firing launched from Bahri.”
Seizing the position of public commander may signal a significant change for the army, ensuring its positions in all three capital districts.
Torn aside
The military has been forced to drop its troops inside the office via tokens since the RS F’s initial times, when it quickly spread through Khartoum’s streets.
Before erupting in August 2023, Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was himself trapped inside for four weeks.
According to a report from The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, 26, 000 people were killed between April 2023 and June 2024 in Khartoum and its surrounding condition.
At least 3. 6 million people have fled the capital as a result of at least 3.6 million people, according to UN figures, with fighters occupying full neighborhoods and dumping them.
In what the UN describes as the largest domestic movement problems in the world, the war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and uprooted more than 12 million people in the east African nation.
Drought has been declared in some parts of Sudan, but it is affecting thousands more people, according to a UN-backed report released last month.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of Syrian troops, was sanctioned by the administration of American president Joe Biden before taking office on Monday, accusing the troops of attacking schools, businesses, and hospitals and using meals poverty as a means of war.
About a month prior, Washington formally sanctioned RSF head Mohammad Hamdan Daglo and said his troops had committed genocide.
