Brazilian President Gustavo Petro criticized the US military aircraft carrying Brazilian migrants for repatriation and emphasized the need for respect and dignity in their treatment.
Petro stated in a blog on X that a immigrant should be treated with the respect a people person deserves. I retracted the US military aircraft carrying Brazilian migrants because of this. I can’t let immigrants stay in countries that don’t like them, but returning them must be done with respect and dignity for both our and their countries. We did fly with our own people on private aircraft without causing any harm to them. Colombia is respected”.
This statement is in response to growing worries about how expelled immigrants from the United States are treated, as highlighted by an incident involving Portuguese evacuees.
Brazil’s government expressed anger on Saturday after a group of 88 deported migrants arrived in Manaus, some in cuffs and chains. People on the journey described brutal conditions, with states of being denied water, restricted bath exposure, and enduring extreme heat.
Some workers were also depicted in violent video boarding the plane, which quickly caused Brazil’s authorities to condemn them.
Brazil’s secretary of animal rights Macaé Evaristo said that the people included susceptible individuals, such as children with autism, who experienced significant problems during the trip.
President Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva reacted by ordering the mobilization of a Portuguese Air Force plane to carry the migrants with respect to their final locations.
The Portuguese government has demanded answers from Washington, calling the therapy” a flagrant disregard for the basic rights of its residents.”
This year alone, many deportation flights have garnered global consideration, including the resettlement of 265 migrants to Guatemala. According to reports, the US began employing defense helicopters for these planes, citing logistical factors, though this shift has drawn major reaction.
