In a heated exchange over immigration laws, immigrant screening, and President Donald Trump‘s professional orders, US Vice President JD Vance and CBS outlet Margaret Brennan got into a heated discussion on Sunday during a Face the Nation meeting.
Trump’s subsequent decision to halt refugee resettlement initiatives and impose stricter vetting for visa applicants was the topic of conversation. In light of the suspension of settlement activities, Bronnan questioned Vance about his earlier statements advocating for appropriately vetted immigrants.
Vance questions vetting procedures
Vance cited security concerns as reason for his skepticism about how migrants are vetted for entry into the US.
” I don’t believe that all these refugees or immigrants have been thoroughly checked,” Vance said. ” We are aware of instances of people who were after allegedly vetted planning terrorist problems in our country. That happened during the battle”.
When Brennan highlighted the suffering of tens of thousands of Afghan migrants stuck in settlement limbo according to Trump’s purchase, Vance defended the president’s cautious strategy.
” My main problem as vice president, Margaret, is to look after the American people”, Vance asserted, emphasising that the state does not harm national security by admitting unvetted people.
Brennan countered, insisting,” These people are vetted”.
Vance made reference to a recent incident involving an Oklahoman regional who was suspected of planning a terrorist strike in October 2023. Despite going through numerous screenings, the person had been identified as a risk.
Vance said,” I don’t want my children to live in neighborhoods where people aren’t effectively vetted.” And I won’t pressure the children of other Americans to do that either because I don’t want them to.
Defending birthright citizenship reforms
The topic of conversation then moved to Trump’s executive order, which is intended to end illegal immigration of children by the country’s citizens. This contentious action has sparked debates over the government’s immigration laws. According to Brennan, the United States is” a nation founded by refugees.”
Vance pushed again, calling recent immigration guidelines outdated and inefficient.
” Only because we were founded by immigrants doesn’t mean that, 240 years later, we have to have the dumbest immigration policy in the world”, Vance said. No nation guarantees that momentary visitors and their children will have full access to the advantages and advantages of being an American citizen.
