In a fight with governor, Florida state legislators passed their own variation of a bill that aims to stop illegal immigration. Ron DeSantis (R-FL ), who labeled the legislation “weak”.

House Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton, both Republican, both proposed a specific treatment and immigration act in favor of their own special treatment and legislation earlier this year. According to its supporters, the policy would improve position cooperation with the federal government’s deportation efforts. Additionally, it would transfer the governor’s authority to the state’s agriculture secretary, who would then have it in place.

The measure passed in the state House, 82-30, but it fell short of a veto-proof lot in the state Senate, 21-16, with five Democrats and all Democrats voting against the policy.

In a post on X on Tuesday night, Perez stated that” Florida Republicans sent a clear message that our country is moving on from the Biden-era broken border policies that placed offenders over police and moving ahead with a new Trump-era of ending catch and release and replacing it with catch and deport.”

DeSantis teased a filibuster of the expenses in a social media post on Wednesday, blasting it as weakening position immigration enforcement and possibly launching a veto effort by the government. Additionally, he advocated for his own immigration policy proposal in opposition to the one the legislature developed.

We must have the most stringent immigration enforcement laws in the country. We may be weakened.

    — Ron DeSantis ( @GovRonDeSantis ) January 29, 2025

DeSantis wrote in a blog on X that the bill that just passed the Florida legislature next night fails to recognize our promises to voters, fails to meet the moment, and may ultimately diminish state immigration enforcement. The removal of illegal aliens from our position calls for robust laws that will guarantee state and local imprisonment support, close catch and release, ending magnets like remittances, and adopt laws that may protect Floridians from the scourge of illegal immigration. The veto pen is ready”.

The state legislature and the governor are at odds with one another in a rare instance during DeSantis ‘ time. They have had few issues since he took office in 2019, with the only notable one occurring when the legislature created new House district lines in 2021.

DeSantis, who has a term limit and is unable to run for reelection in 2026, may be losing some of his legislative power following his unsuccessful presidential bid last year.

The governor, who initially contested Trump for the GOP nomination but has since vested in him, has also claimed to have spoken with the White House about his proposals, despite the claim that the state legislative leaders are pursuing President Donald Trump’s interests. Trump supported DeSantis ‘ request for a special session, but he hasn’t commented on the state’s current conflict.
