One problem may be impossible to avoid as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. prepares for his Senate assurance sessions to become the next secretary of health and individual services: abortion and contraception pills.
The removal of Food and Drug Administration security measures on the pill during Covid lockdowns, including the in-person attend and follow-up treatment necessity, has created significant risks for women, and , pro-life groups , are urging the restoration of essential security measures. RFK Jr. has the opportunity to answer this question properly and sensibly, taking a common-sense view that protects children’s wellness.  ,
Since the reversal of , Roe v. Wade , in 2022, abortion advocates have accelerated efforts to distribute abortion pills online, taking advantage of the removal of longstanding FDA safety protocols — known as Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies ( REMS ) — during the Covid-19 pandemic. This deregulation makes it possible to obtain the abortion drug mifepristone without performing any clinical tests to confirm gestational age, rule out ectopic pregnancy, or recognize high-risk conditions. The effect? Women are left susceptible to lethal consequences.  ,
Pregnancy supplements are no harmless. The FDA itself acknowledges serious risks, including bleeding, fever, and even dying, with some 36 mortality linked to the medication mifepristone. Tragically, these problems are never theoretical. One horrible instance is the demise of twin mom Amber Nicole Thurman, who had taken abortion pills without a follow-up check. Amber’s abortion clinic may have identified and treated the problems she had caused by the drug immediately, and her existence might have been saved.  ,
Important health protection have a chance to be restored by the incoming administration. RFK Jr.  , does become uniquely positioned to address this issue. Kennedy, a renowned critic of governmental underachievements, may restore the REMS for pregnancy pills and adopt additional requirements ensuring the collection of appropriate safety data on these drugs, giving women’s health precedence over philosophical goals.
The federal government may take a nonpartisan action to protect people from unnecessary harm by mandating medical supervision for abortion pills. Reintroducing REMS would not only outlaw the contraception pill, but also ensure that it is used in accordance with the same safety specifications used for other high-risk medications.
Yet pro-abortion advocates should understand the necessity of such protections. Forcing women to understand serious complications alone, without medical tests or appropriate care, is no health care — it’s carelessness. In this regard, Kennedy may help to break up the gender gap by demonstrating that women’s health transcends politics.
The liberalization of abortion pills is a worrying sign that philosophy is being prioritized over health. If RFK Jr. or any other HHS future chief reinstates crucial protection, it could save lives without possible violating state ‘ right or unique freedoms.
Protecting women’s wellness should be a shared purpose, irrespective of one’s position on abortion. Restoring FDA monitoring of the pregnancy supplement is a common-sense reform that both pro-life and pro-abortion Americans really help.  ,
