The National Assessment of Education Progress released its 2024 report on Wednesday, which showed that reading levels for fourth and eighth graders were still rising in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Roughly 40 % of fourth graders do not meet age-appropriate reading levels, an all-time high, according to the report, and average reading scores for eighth graders slipped 2 points.
Although Alabama was the only state in which math performance among students had improved compared to prepandemic levels, the NAEP report did indicate that math scores were consistently holding or improving.
