The Laken Riley Act, which was named in honor of a slain Georgia medical scholar whose name became a gathering cry during his election campaign, was signed by US President Trump. Prior to a judgment, the law mandates detention and the possibility imprisonment of illegal immigrants charged with fraud and violent crimes.
” We’re going to take them out to Guantanamo”, Trump said during the signing ceremony. Trump referred to it as” a landmark law that we’re doing today.”
” It’s so sad we have to be doing it. Her name will live long in the laws of our state”, Trump added.
Trump expressed gratitude for the Laken Riley Act’s unanimous aid, which was his first effort to enact stricter immigration laws.
Riley, aged 22, was a medical student at Augusta University College of Nursing learner. When she went for a work on February 22, 2024, she was killed in a violent altercation with Jose Antonio Ibarra.
Ibarra was found guilty of murder and other crimes after a judge-only test in which he waived his right to judge prosecution. Without a chance of pardon, the judge imposed a life sentence.
Former Republican Party members President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump put the blame on Riley’s dying. They cited Ibarra’s prior arrest for unlawful entrance near El Paso, Texas, in September 2022, during an extraordinary movement wave, after which he was released pending emigration court proceedings.
He never would have had the opportunity to kill her, according to Georgia Republican Representative Mike Collins, who said,” If this work had been the law of the land.”
