A Biblical religious sect in the state of Queensland, in northern Australia, was found guilty on Wednesday of denying the girl’s 8-year-old diabetic girl’s life-saving insulin and on the spot.
The lady, Elizabeth Struhs, died in January 2022 in the area of Toowoomba after the therapy was withdrawn on spiritual basis, leading to ketosis — a serious complication of diabetes.
The sect held a” key idea” in God’s healing energy to the exclusion of health care, according to the prosecutor at Queensland’s Supreme Court.
Diabetes sufferers usually experience life-saving effects when they do not produce enough insulin themselves to maintain a controlled sugar level, which often leads to severe health issues.
‘ Just sleeping’
Jason and Kerrie Struhs, the girl’s father and mother, were both found guilty of manslaughter for abusing their daughter’s duty of care.
By denying her glucose, they showed “grave social grief and disregard for human life”, the prosecutor said.
Brendan Stevens, the home-based church’s spiritual leader, and the other religion people were also found guilty of manslaughter for purposefully enticing the father to withdraw the glucose.
Given their mental state at the time, the prosecutor said, it was impossible to prove that Stevens and the kid’s parents knew she had probably die.
According to legend, the cult members prayed and sang next to the lady as she passed away over the course of a month before waiting for 36 hours before calling paramedics following her death.
The accused consistently told the judge and authorities that they thought she would emerge from the dead and that she was “only sleeping.”
On February 11, imprisonment may occur.
