A women’s basketball game in Bangladesh was postponed on Wednesday following the protests of Islamist hardliners. This was the next event in recent days.
After protesters, including Islamic college students and teachers, marched toward the place in protest of women’s participation in sports, the match between city teams from Joypurhat and Rangpur was called off.
” The Islamists in our neighborhood marched toward the location as they gathered in a niche. There were” so many of them,” event organizer Samiul Hasan Emon told AFP. ” The situation worsened, and we had to reschedule yesterday’s event”.
Islamist organizations ‘ growing affect
Spiritual extremists led the demonstration, which they claimed was against Islamic rules.
” Women ‘ sport is un-Islamic”, said Abu Bakkar Siddique, a madrassa principal who participated in the show. We are obligated by our religion to cease all actions that conflict with our convictions.
Another children’s suit was postponed a moment earlier in the nearby town of Dinajpur after protests by Islamism wielding sticks. According to tutor Moniruzzaman Zia, authorities had to leave gamers for their safety.
During the Dinajpur opposition, conflicts erupted between Islamist protesters and counter-protesters, with both teams throwing masonry. Amit Roy, a local government official, confirmed that four persons had been hospitalized and had already been discharged.
Bangladesh football federation condemns protest
The Bangladesh Football Federation ( BFF ) condemned the disruption, emphasising the right of women to participate in sports.
” Sports is for everyone, and people have full right to participate in it”, BFF internet director Sadman Sakib said in a statement.
The incidents occur in Bangladesh as a result of a discernible rise in Islamist groups ‘ effect, especially since Sheikh Hasina was ousted last year.
