After Denmark criticized his remarks about annexing the automatic Danish place, American President Donald Trump indicated on Thursday that he is interested in purchasing Greenland.
In an interview, Rubio said the United States is certainly considering military actions against Denmark, a Nato alliance, but confirmed that Trump’s involvement in Greenland is true. ” This is not a joke”, he said.
” President Trump’s put out that what he intends to accomplish, which is to buy it”, Rubio told SiriusXM Radio.
” This is not about acquiring territory for the purpose of acquiring area,” the statement goes. This is in our nationwide attention and it needs to be solved”, he said.
Rubio even mentioned Nato’s defence agreements to Denmark.
” We have a security deal with them to defend Greenland if it becomes under assault,” he said. ” We might as well have more control over what happens that if we’re already on the hook for having to do that,” he said.
Trump’s comment have been discussed in conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and other Western allies. Additionally, she and Trump had a telephone discussion that was described as heated.
Rubio claimed he wasn’t on the telephone, but that Trump” just speaks directly and honestly with folks.”
Rubio argued that “diplomacy often works better when you’re clear rather than using platitudes and vocabulary that translate nothing.”
Rubio also expressed worry about China’s involvement in Greenland. He warned that China, seeking Arctic exposure, could increase its influence it through state-run businesses.
Rubio said,” It is entirely reasonable to think that the Chinese may finally, perhaps even in the near future, try to do things the same way they have done elsewhere in Greenland.”
