A nearly two decades old picture of Portuguese artist Fernanda Torres in blackface has come back after her Academy Award nomination.
The” I’m Still Here” star apologized for the poor judgment she used in her late teens as a housekeeper for the Brazilian television series” Fantastico.”
” I am really sorry for this”, she told Deadline. ” I’m making this statement because I need to address this quickly to prevent further pain and confusion.”
She added:” At that time, despite the efforts of Black activities and organizations, the attention of the racist background and imagery of , blackface-controversy/” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>blackface , hadn’t already entered the mainstream public perception in Brazil. Thanks to better social understanding and critical but imperfect achievements in this century, it’s quite clear now in our country and outside that , blackface-controversy/” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>blackface , is not acceptable”.
The 59-year-old, who is away for best actress at the , 2025 Oscars, concluded:” This is an important conversation we had maintain to have with one another in order to avoid the standardization of discriminatory practices then and now. I’m still at the forefront of my efforts as an actor and international citizen, and I’m open to making important changes in a world free of racism and inequality.
Torres won the , Golden Globe , and Critics Choice awards for her part in the social historical crisis, and is a front-runner to take home the coveted trophy.
Without this promotion problem, this year’s street to the Oscars would’ve then been historic for Torres, who is only the second Portuguese to ever be nominated in the category. Her father is her family,  , Fernanda Montenegro, for 1998’s” Central Station”. Both movies were directed by , Walter Salles.
