Following her talk with President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that U.S. tariffs on Mexico have been briefly suspended for one month. Trump afterward confirmed this in a subsequent social media post.
Sheinbaum claimed that Mexico has consented to promptly dispatch 10,000 National Guard personnel to bolster its relationship with the US. Moreover, she noted that the U. S. has committed to work aimed at curbing the smuggling of high-powered arms into Mexico.
Trump acknowledged the troop deployment as a way to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States, but he did not address Mexico’s worries about weapons prostitution.
Levies on American imports continue to be in place despite the temporary pause in Mexico’s tariffs. At 3 p.m. ET, Trump is scheduled to speak with Justin Trudeau, the prime minister.
To communicate a long-term trade deal with Mexico, Trump has assigned Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Howard Lutnick, his nomination for commerce minister, to lead conversations over the next quarter, according to ABC News.
Sheinbaum, who assumed business in October 2024, shared details of her trade with Trump, stating that when he asked how long she wanted the price pause to next, she replied, “forever”. Trump finally suggested a one-month disqualification.
” He emphasized the business gap the U. S. has with Mexico”, Sheinbaum said. I stated that the trade agreement strengthens both economy and aids us in our fight against China and other countries rather than a gap.
Sheinbaum even pointed out that Trump had agreed to set up a working team to discuss business issues.
Trump had stated his intention to have discussions with Sheinbaum and Trudeau before officially enacting fresh trade restrictions prior to the tax statement. Beginning on Tuesday, the president had indicated that the White House would start imposing 25 % tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports and 10 % tariffs on goods from China.
On Sunday, Sheinbaum posted a video on social media calling for “reason and rules” in global connections. She warned that both Mexico and the United States may suffer severe socioeconomic effects from the taxes.
” This 25 % tariff will impact both nations, but it will have particularly severe consequences for the U. S. economy”, she said. It will increase the cost of all goods that are exported from Mexico to the United States by 25 %.
On Saturday, Trudeau announced that Canada would impose a 25 % tariff on roughly 155 billion Canadian dollars ( roughly$ 107 billion USD ) worth of American goods in response to Trump’s proposed tariffs. The head of Canada added that Trump has not spoken to him since his opening.
Sheinbaum instructed Mexico’s economic secretary to proceed with” Plan B,” a set of price and non-tariff methods designed to protect Mexico’s financial interests, even though she did not provide specific information on how her presidency would combat the taxes.
She even made a note of the U.S. government’s commitment to business partnerships, which have been in place for almost 30 years.
