After a contact between Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and President Trump led to a border package that appeared to be acceptable to both leaders, Canada received a 30-day delay in imposing US taxes on its exports on Monday evening, just before they were scheduled to start.
Trudeau had previously pledged to impose tariffs on US goods and fight against them. In the end, he seemed to make reasonable agreements to Trump on the frontier policies, including dozens of “front-line ‘” officers stationed at the border.
In a social media post outlining the terms of the agreement, Trudeau stated,” I really had a good contact with President Trump.” The proposed taxes will be halted for at least 30 days while we work along.
Although its 30-day sky suggested further negotiations might need to be held in the future, the agreement eased tensions that had already erupted into a making trade war between the two close supporters and major trading partners.
In particular, Trudeau said that by listing organizations and groups as criminal companies, as Trump has stated he wants to do in the US, Canada would make a new place for a methadone king and redouble its efforts to address the opioid crisis, which kills Indians every day. Canada would commit 200 million Canadian dollars ( about$ 139m ) to fresh intelligence-gathering efforts around the fentanyl and drug trade, Trudeau said.
He added that Canada would remain to adopt a new border-tightening program that it had announced days before as part of the deal with Trump. That includes the addition of more frontier guards, the implementation of new technologies at the edges, and the costs of CA$ 1.3 billion in new money over the next few decades. ” Nearly 10, 000 front-line workers are and will be working on protecting the border”, Trudeau said.
If the tariffs had been in place just after midnight on Tuesday, the postponement would have eased the strain on a number of American industries that were experiencing severe disruptions. nyt
