US President Donald Trump initiated a thorough evaluation of US financial contributions to the multinational organization on Tuesday by signing an executive order directing the US to leave several UN organizations, including the Human Rights Council ( UNHRC ).
Additionally, in addition to a planned evaluation of its involvement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO ), the White House withdrew from the primary UN relief organization for Palestinians ( UNRWA ).
Did Scharf, a White House official, explained that these actions were taken in response to alleged “anti-American bias” at these UN institutions.
The United States was scheduled to end its present name on December 31 among 47 members elected by the General Assembly for three-year words in the UN Human Rights Council, keeping observer standing at the moment.
The law issued on Tuesday appears to have ended all British involvement in government activities, which include both country-specific human right assessments and investigations into specific rights violations.
More typically, the executive order calls for a review of British involvement and money in the UN in illumination of the disparate and divisive money amounts and levels, according to Scharf.
The Republican has constantly criticized Washington for its significant monetary contributions to international organizations, particularly by urging other countries to increase their participation in NATO.
UNRWA is the key humanitarian aid provider to Palestinians, providing important aid to the roughly 1.9 million displaced people in Gaza who rely on its support for basic survival needs.
Previously, the Biden administration suspended US funding to UNRWA in January 2024 after Israel claimed 12 staff people participated in Hamas’s October 7, 2023, abuse.
Despite establishing some concerns about UNRWA’s independence, several studies failed to provide any proof of Israel’s main accusations. Consequently, most contributors who had suspended their aid resumed their monetary contributions.
