In the eastern Ukrainian city of Izyum, a Russian ballistic missile attack on Tuesday killed five people, including a pregnant student, and injured more than four others, according to officials.
After the assault, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that it was “impossible to resolve with this violence” and urged supporters to put pressure on Moscow to put an end to its almost three-year war.
Oleg Synegubov, government of the wider Kharkiv region, said 55 people had been wounded in the Russian attack, and that two young women were among the dying.
” They were 18 and 19 years old and one of them was pregnant”, he wrote on social media.
After identifying one of the patients laid out in a body case lined up by officers, sad women at the picture saw sad women consoling one another.
When Larysa Chygrynets heard the missile attack hours after the weather raid alarm, she was working at the local tax office.
” Anything was covered in blood and the panels were smashed”, the 51-year-old told AFP of the moments in her company.
She claimed that Izyum residents had been returning after 40 kilometers ( 25 miles ) of the front line and that things had been relatively quiet.
” All was quiet, little indicated problems. By then, we anticipated that everything would be in order. But you can see what they have done”, she said.
Zelenskyy claimed that the city government building had been damaged in the assault, while Synegubov claimed that a five-storey home building had also been struck.
” We need to put strain on Russia, use as much force as possible the force of arms, the pressure of punishment, the power of politics to stop the despair and protect life”, Zelensky wrote on social media.
Before the Russian invasion of Izyum in February 2022, the city’s population was around 45, 000 people, and the city’s initial months of occupation lasted until later that year when it was overtaken by Ukrainian forces.
Russian forces are making gains in the region and undoing the advances Kyiv’s army made in their 2022 counteroffensive, while stepping up bombardments.
