According to many news reports from Tuesday, the Trump administration is considering whether to pass an executive order to shut down the U.S. Department of Education or, if necessary, to significantly reduce the agency.
Elon Musk, who has been assigned by President Trump to downsize several bloated federal agencies across the ring, is reportedly stepping in on the training office, according to The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

C. R. and Ed generally”, Craig Trainor, the company’s acting associate director, said during an all-hands-on-deck meeting, according to a recording obtained by the Times.
According to those with knowledge of the conversation,” The Musk team’s relationship occurred as the White House was envisaging the possibility of issuing an executive order to effectively locked down the Education Department,” the Times continued.
The Journal, which even quoted anonymous options, reported:
According to people with knowledge of the situation, the officials have been discussing an executive order that may shift some functions of the company to various departments or shut down all functions that aren’t directly written into statute. According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the president’s move team had drafted an executive order prior to Trump’s election that would have directed the education minister to create a plan to eliminate the department and request that Congress be approuve any attempt.
The Trump team has taken significant steps in the last two months to clean the company of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and employees, as The College Fix originally reported.
However, it’s unclear whether the leader is axe the training department, which he promised to do during the campaign trail.
The governmental agency is enormous. It began in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter, and now employs more than 4, 000 people with an annual budget of about$ 80 billion.
The department is in charge of, among other things, monetary aid and student loans for college kids, career and technical education money, Title IX rules and monitoring, and the Office for Civil Rights. Additionally, it keeps extensive data records on every school in the country.
The department’s federal student loan portfolio, known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is “responsible for the mechanism that gives students access to college financial aid,” according to NPR.
