Many Republican politicians are gearing up to ban the practice in various states across the country after citizens successfully defeated pro-ranked-choice election (RCV ) vote activities in the 2024 votes.
The GOP-controlled Kansas Senate passed legislation ( SB 6 ) on Tuesday that would outlaw the use of RCV in Sunflower State elections. The estimate will then head to the position House for consideration.
Republicans have recently used supermajorities to supersede vetoes issued by Democrat governors in both chambers. Laura Kelly.
Often referred to as “rigged-choice ballot” by its critics, RCV is a method in which citizens rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice seats in the first round of election, the last-place winner is eliminated, and his votes are reallocated to the voter’s following choice member. The voting process continues until a single member receives the most seats.
RCV has  , largely , been , pushed , by Democrats and has led to the , Democrat , triumph of chairs for which Democratic candidates finally received the majority voting. It has also been shown to , produce , false election outcomes  , as well as higher levels of , discarded vote.
Election Transparency Initiative Chair Ken Cuccinelli reacted to the Kansas Senate’s section of SB 6 by pointing out how” [l]eft-wing megadonors are financing a global campaign to promote the disastrous election scheme,” which he claimed is intended to “dramatically push our politics to the Left, promote Left-leaning officials, and undermine social functions to their advantage by disenfranchising citizens.”
Leftist and pro-RCV companies poured tens of millions of dollars into efforts promoting ballot efforts that sought to enact or maintain the discipline in different state constitutions and laws in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Much to opponents ‘ despair, voters defeated every one of these steps, with the exceptions of Washington, D. C. and Alaska, where an action repealing the country’s RCV method was just defeated.
( Voters also approved a resolution that would make Missouri the eleventh state to outlaw ranked-choice voting. )
” Now more than ever, we need to protect the right to vote in free and fair elections where voters can trust,” Cuccinelli said.” But the Ranked-Choice Voting scheme does exactly the opposite,” he added. It is a “wrecking ball for election integrity,” is never a workable one, and should never be.
Kansas isn’t the only state where GOP legislators are using their 2024 victories to jettison RCV into extinction, however.
Republicans in billtrack50.com/billdetail/1790112″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Iowa, billtrack50.com/billdetail/1779291″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>North Dakota, billtrack50.com/billdetail/1757166″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>South Carolina, billtrack50.com/billdetail/1751192″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Texas, and billtrack50.com/billdetail/1779131″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Wyoming have filed bills prohibiting the practice in their respective states. In Minnesota, a bill was filed that prohibits local governments from adopting RCV for municipal races.
Meanwhile, GOP legislators in Alaska and Maine have put forward measures aiming to repeal their states ‘ use of ranked-choice voting. Passage of repeal legislation in these states in recent years has proven difficult, however.
Alaska Republicans and Democrats entered a power-sharing agreement after winning majorities in both chambers of the state legislature in the 2024 election. This agreement, which was praised in years prior, has stymied previous legislative efforts to repeal the Last Frontier State’s use of RCV.
Unlike Alaska, Republicans are in the minority in Maine’s legislature, where Democrats have previously blocked GOP-led legislation aimed at repealing the state’s RCV system.
