” HUD is a very specific spot”, Turner said in an exclusive interview. ” It’s cover. It’s destitution. It’s crisis treatment. We feel every home in America, directly or indirectly, and that is something that I consider to be a great visiting. And so we want to make use of this task and the platform we’ve been given to influence generations in our country, help people understand the American dream and be on the road to home ownership, assist people in achieving their God-given possible, and to survive as well.

In terms of his past work, Turner suggested he is bringing a “different view point” to the problems at hand but that he intends to create a team capable of withstand the demands of his position.
” I’m a team person, and I realize that no one person can do the work alone, and thus having the right team — the right people in the right sites doing the right project, moving in one audio and one voice — to me, that’s what a successful squad is”, Turner said. ” Being in professional sports, being in sports time has taught me wonderful living training: how to overcome adversity, how to be polite in victory and steadfast in battle, how to have a little memory. If you don’t win this time, getting up off, get on the field, and work the following play”.
Like many of Trump’s another Cabinet nominations, Turner’s assurance advanced out of commission along party lines in later January. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren (D-MA ) told the committee that despite having some reservations about his bipartisan commitment to addressing the “housing supply crisis,” she and the other committee Democrats would not support him because he had not yet passed an FBI background check.

” Mr. Turner may function as a member of President Trump’s Cabinet and be in the range of political succession”, Warren said. There is no cause for concern that a problem might arise, but this commission would be reckless if it did not conduct a background check on a Cabinet nominee, and it would not be in line with committee precedent.
By a ballot of 55-44, Turner was chosen for confirmation early on Wednesday evening. Sens. The only Democrats to join Republicans in casting a confirmation vote were John Fetterman (D-PA ) and Peter Welch (D-VT). Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) abstained from the ballot.
Despite having a relatively new social background compared to some of his other case people, Turner does have a working relationship with Trump. In 2019, the leader appointed Turner to be the chairman of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, where he and Trump’s first HUD director, Dr. Ben Carson, helmed the government’s Opportunity Zone program.

Turner credited that it was” revolutionary time” in preparing him for this new position with the program’s goal of increasing investment capital in underserved communities across the country. He particularly mentioned the need to include all” partners” in community-based choices, including, but not limited to, local government officials, business leaders, and trust officials.
Turner praised Carson for his leadership skills over the past six decades, according to Turner.
” Ben Carson is a very specific man, certainly for our country, and he’s a specific person in my life”, Turner told the Washington Examiner. ” He’s been a great mentor to me. The term “encouragement” is the one that comes to mind. He has been a tremendous enabler to me, a great teacher”.

” I may call him at any time, to move on him, to ask him questions, to ask his advice, and I think that’s kind of a lost art in our technology”, he continued. ” The younger generation nowadays doesn’t like to stay with the older era, but I’ve been so blessed to have excellent coaches in my life, including Dr. Carson, where you can just stay with them and talk to them”.
But, Turner says he did not specifically want Carson’s assistance to embrace Trump’s election this time around.
” No, he didn’t have to get me over”, he laughed. ” This is my heart, to not only meet the administration but to serve my country more.”
Turner was unflinching about the difficulties he would encounter in this fresh position. Since the Great Recession, home and book prices have soared, and supply is still behind nationwide demand.
One component of the alternative is to encourage new design. Turner said regulation transformation, a core principle of Trump’s underlying agenda, will be a key focus of his department.

” There’s special needs in every community”, Turner said. ” Building houses is certainly a one-size-fits-all work, and so we have to look at the common building standards. On a local levels, we must consider permitting. We have to appear at planning. We have to appear at top and mass restrictions. We need thousands of units of accommodation in our state, but the only way that we can continue to build or create more is to reduce the cost, to reduce the governmental problem, to include public-private partnerships”.
In order to accomplish this, Turner says he intends to begin traveling the country right away to assess the immediate roadblocks ‘ negative effects on particularly at-risk communities. As the region struggles to rebuild after one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, that region will likely be included.

” I want to go to the people immediately”, the secretary said. ” That’s how I like to operate, similar to how we dealt with opportunity zones — to go to the cities, to go and meet with the stakeholders, to identify what the problem is and see how we can come up with solutions. I believe that my role as an advocate and ambassador for HUD is to help people and bring solutions.
Though Democrats have voiced some concerns about Turner’s nomination, Republicans appeared to welcome him with open arms.
Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), the chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, praised Turner as” the solution we have been looking for to enact a change at HUD and usher in a golden era of homeownership”.
Secretary Turner and I both acknowledge that public service is a calling, and Scott has pledged to work diligently to find creative solutions to our nation’s most pressing issues, Scott told the Washington Examiner. Over the next four years, I look forward to working with him to strengthen our efforts to increase homeownership and expand opportunities for more Americans.
There are two things beyond Turner’s control that could have a significant impact on HUD’s work: the Federal Reserve’s continued interest rates and the president’s desire to drastically reduce total federal spending, which could include a full review and possible demise of department grant programs.

In the face of these challenges, Turner vowed to “maximize the budget” he is afforded and threw his support behind Trump’s fiscal agenda.
” This is something that’s very important to the president, and it’s very important to me”, Turner told the Washington Examiner. ” This is the mission of HUD: to build safe and sustainable communities. We must restore our financial balance. I believe it is crucial to what the president is talking about because high interest rates and high inflation make it difficult to build affordable housing.
