Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX ), who praised the Trump administration’s efforts to effectively end illegal immigration along the Texas-Mexico border, said a significant decrease in illegal crossings in a town that had been a hotspot during the Biden administration’s border crisis.
Abbott made the revelations at a conservative think tank conference in Austin, Texas, at which time he disclosed that border surveillance had been harmed by illegal border crossings in the month since Donald Trump took the oath of office.
” About two years ago in Eagle Pass, Texas, there’s a capital garden there that the Biden administration was processing up to 5, 000 illegal immigrants a day”, Abbott said Wednesday evening at the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Policy Summit.
According to Abbott,” we shut that down by wiring it entirely locked,” in reference to the state’s policy of preventing national Border Patrol agents from entering that area. ” And now there are crossing, on average, less than one person a day crossing in that area”.
Statewide, bridges from Mexico have dropped to an average of 150 unlawful immigrants per day, Abbott added.
According to state data released on Monday, the number of illegal immigrants and immigrants who were apprehended entering the United States from Mexico in January quickly decreased as a result of the following Trump administration’s crackdown on the southern border.
” From Jan. 21 through Jan. 31, 2025, the number of U. S. Border Patrol apprehensions along the southwest border dropped , 85 %  , from the same period in 2024″ , , U. S. Customs and Border Protection , officials said in a press release Monday.
CBP attributed the drop to the country’s” no longer catching and releasing improper creatures into the U.S. S”.
The Biden administration’s small , border  city of Eagle Pass experienced a crisis due to the number of illegal immigrants crossing the Rio Grande and entering area.
Federal law enforcement officials reported that the city’s 30 000 people had witnessed thousands of noncitizens swimming and wading across the Rio Grande from Piedras Negras, Mexico, in the last few weeks.
The endless flow of immigrants streaming across the border onto U. S. soil in Eagle Pass daily prompted the , Border Patrol , to” catch and release” people into the community, spooking residents unaccustomed to the unfamiliar faces showing up in their once-quiet neighborhoods.
The state’s Democratic governor, Rolando Salinas, pleaded with the White House for support, to no avail.
In early 2024, Abbott mandated that position forces block Border Patrol agents from the Eagle Pass borders and that a fence been built around the city’s municipal area as a result of the ongoing mass crossings and releases.
In doing so, Texas accepted the responsibility of maintaining the regional border, claiming that the federal government was merely bringing in and releasing immigrants into the country after they had been detained and then released.

Abbott claimed that the country’s future success was being aided by his and Trump’s services ‘ prioritization of the enforcement of immigration legislation.
” The boundary is in great arms for the next four times”, said Abbott. ” In four years, he is gone. He may do a fantastic job to ensure the security of the border over the next four decades. Our goal is to make sure that over the next four years, we will do a fantastic job of preparing the Texas state’s excellent condition for security for the next 40 times.
