Nearly a dozen militants stormed a police check post in Karak district in Pakistan’s restive northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP ) province on Thursday, killing at least three officers and injuring six others, according to officials.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan ( TTP), which has frequently targeted police and security personnel in the province, is likely to be the target of suspicion despite the fact that no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
” The terrorists used light and heavy weapons to attack the check post and attempted to capture it,” the statement read.” The terrorists opened fire from all sides at the check post in Karak’s Bahadur Khel area. The municipal police said in a statement that the officers at the checkpost “offered stiff weight in an encounter that lasted two hours and the terrorists then fled.”
Following the demise of a fragile peace between TTP and the condition in November 2022, there has been an increase in violence in Pakistan’s neighboring province of KP.
The Kabul leadership is alleged to be facilitating TTP fighters, a claim that Afghan authorities refute. This is in contrast to the rise in violent violence. The majority of these assaults were carried out against security and law enforcement personnel, but also citizens and government leaders suffered.
Four soldiers were killed last week in KP’s Dera Ismail Khan district by gunfire and an IED that terrorists allegedly exploded in an improvised explosive device ( IED ) launch.
In Balochistan, another restive province in Pakistan’s north, 18 soldiers were killed in an invasion by jihadists earlier this month.
According to Islamabad think-tank Centre for Research and Security Studies ( CRSS), 2024 is the most lethal year for security forces in a decade, with at least 685 military and police fatalities as a result of 444 terrorist attacks.
In addition to these problems, militants have increased the number of brutal murders and robberies of authorities in KP and Balochistan.
