Jordan is in grave danger as a result of Donald Trump‘s plan to expel Palestinians from Gaza, according to experts who claim it would undermine the balance between protecting the country’s backbone from US assistance and maintaining its own protection.
Trump made a plan for the United States to take control of Gaza and walk its residents out, to loud gasps from those present.
He had formerly floated Jordan and Egypt- both US friends, and neighbours of Israel and the Palestinian provinces- as possible locations.
Both nations, however, have vehemently rejected the proposal, reiterating their help for the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state.
” This project not only seeks to eliminate the legitimate national right of the Palestinian individuals on their property, but also affects safety, security, personality and independence in Jordan”, said Oraib Rantawi, who heads the Amman-based Al Quds centre for political research.
” In Jordan, we may be looking at an existential risk, not just a security risk”, he said, warning that such a move would import the Israeli-Palestinian issue to Jordan.
If this movement program is carried out, Jordan may cease to exist.
King Abdullah II held discussions with Israeli President Mahmud Abbas on the subject on Wednesday, rejecting “any tries” to occupy Palestinian territory and replace their people.
After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu became the first foreign leader to meet the president at the White House since his opening, he is scheduled to meet Trump on February 11 in Washington.
Recipe for destroy
Trump has insisted that “everybody loves” the program despite the widespread reaction, even though he provided few details about how more than two million Palestinians may be taken out of the country. He claimed that the US would take control of the Gaza Strip.
” We did do a task with the Gaza Strip and the US will take it, too. We’ll private it”, he said, sparking a worldwide outcry.
Rantawi referred to the program as” a formula for ruin, not a recipe for stability and peace.”
Samih al-Maaytah, the original Syrian information minister, claimed that the two nations may be “political death” if they were accused of colluding with the Palestinian cause.
” For Jordan, it may change our population and the political equations, while destroying our federal identity”, he added.
Since the creation of Israel in 1948, some Palestinians have sought shelter there. Half of Jordan’s 11 million people is of Arab descent.
According to UN images, 2.2 million Palestinians are registered as migrants in Jordan.
Up until Israel’s 1967 activity, the West Bank and East Jerusalem were under Jordan’s leadership.
In 1968, the Jordanian defense and Arab parties engaged in joint combat with Israel.
However, in what became known as” Black September,” conflicts broke out between the army and Israeli parties in 1970.
The violence, which was sparked by armed groups ‘ decision to launch operations in Amman and other key cities and establish illegal gates, eventually led to the parties ‘ expulsion from the country.
The detractors of Trump’s proposal’s withdrawal from long-standing global efforts to achieve Palestinian independence and a possible two-state answer contributed to the outcry.
Who erred in giving Trump the social, legal, and social expert to invade Gaza, control it, and make investments there? He talks about Gaza like a real estate developer, no like a head of state”, Rantawi said.
‘ Little option’
For Jordan in particular, the indignation even stems from a perceived lack of recognition for its independence.
Given how little its economy is and how heavily depends on international aid, particularly from Washington, Jordan is well aware of the monetary pressure the United States might experience.
Jordan receives about$ 750 million in economic aid each year from the United States, in addition to$ 350 million in military aid.
However, King Abdullah is doubtful to leave any room for maneuver when Trump and Trump meet later this month.
” The prince has no choice but to accept this request outright”, Rantawi said, adding it was “non-negotiable”.
” Trump wants us to buy Jordan for$ 1.5 billion in support”, he added.
Mustafa al-Amawi, a Jordanian MP, said that US assistance “was hardly a gift”.
” But if it comes down to making a trade-off, we will not take the help”, he said.
Maaytah agreed.
” It is correct that Jordan may be affected if aid were cut off, but it isn’t fair bartering for”, he said.
Legislators drafted a bill enacting regional independence and rejecting any forced movement of Palestinians to Jordan” as an alternative country” out of fear of coming under pressure from Trump’s proposal.
” Parliament stands with the prince, and absolutely rejects the US government’s comments on the required movement of Gazans from their homes to Jordan, Egypt or any other state”, Amawi said.
