TOI Correspondent from London: Conservatives have announced their first policy under new leader Kemi Badenoch: a massive clampdown on immigration if it returns to govt.
They intend to make a person’s required 15-year residence in the UK a further five years before they can apply for citizenship, and increase that requirement from five to ten years. Now, membership can become applied for 12 weeks after ILR is obtained.
Tory may make regulations prohibiting those who have claimed advantages or rely on social cover while on a work visa to apply for ILR in Britain. Those who claim Initiative must also be able to demonstrate that their home would be a gross contributor, with a large enough salary, especially if they want to take dependents, and that they do not have a criminal history.
Additionally, conservatives intend to outlaw everyone who enters the UK without an illegal immigration card or who overstays their citizenship. Those with work and study permits who are in violation of their visas or who have applied to remove or cancel their visas will be denied.
The changes will be made for Indians, but not for those who are eligible for the Hong Kong schemes ‘ Ukraine and British Nationals ( Overseas ).
Tories will introduce new, legally binding monthly caps on visas, which will be “much, significantly lower than current migration levels,” it said. In 2018, Tories were the ones who lifted these cap.
The plan comes as Labour and the Republicans are currently ahead of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK in the most recent YouGov ballot.
