A Palestinian man who was held captive in a immigrant vessel from Lebanon was given a three-year prison sentence for allegedly causing the death of a younger girl from dehydration by a Cypriot court on Friday, according to authorities.
The Arab nationwide, 47, was sentenced on Thursday after the Famagusta criminal court found him guilty of neglect that led to the death of a three-year-old Arab woman who had dehydrated, according to a statement from the Cypriot trial service.
On January 24, 2024, a young woman was one of 60 “distressed and dehydrated” Syrians who were rescued from a congested wooden boat off the coast of the Mediterranean area.
The accused person “had assumed the role of commander of the wooden ship that transported the Arab migrants,” according to the prosecution service, which did not identify either the victim or the offender.
The greatest sentence in Cyprus is four years in prison, as per Greek rules.
