Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Friday that Hungary would launch legitimate action to overthrow non-governmental organizations and media sources in the nation that receive cash from the United States and other international sources.
Orban, a supporter of US President Donald Trump, claimed in remarks on condition television that his administration was moving “line by collection” through Hungarian businesses that have received financial support from the US. He praised Trump’s determination to dissolve the US Agency for International Development, which is tasked with providing humanitarian aid globally, claiming that the money had been used to fund companies that wanted to” destroy” his state.
These global network must be eliminated at this very moment, according to Orban. ” It is necessary to make their living officially impossible”.
Under the leadership of Orban, Hungary has implemented crackdowns on Organizations and the government’s independent media, passing laws that, according to critics, seek to vilify and impede organizations that support women and minorities, provide legal and human rights assistance, and introduce official corruption.
When Orban’s right-wing nationalist government established the Sovereignty Protection Office, an agency tasked with investigating individuals and media stores it deems to be exerting international control, those efforts increased in 2023.
Hungary’s surprise services can aid in its investigations by gathering information on any organizations or individuals who profit from foreign financing and influence public debate.
But critics have compared the company to Russia’s “foreign broker” law, and said it can be used to unilaterally targeted government critics, including Organizations and journalists. People found guilty of a crime could receive three-year prison sentences.
Orban compared Trump’s actions to demolish the US company to a” purifying breeze” from what he called the” Trump tornado,” and said people who worked for businesses that received funding from USAID may be referred to as “agents.”
According to Orban, “every income coming from America may be made public, and those who receive it should be subject to sanctions,” for all recipients. You can’t take money from abroad to effect Romanian politics, and this law will be upheld. Those involved may face legal effects”.
Many domestic and international organizations have accused Hungary under the Orban of burial political underrepresentation, of violating the rights of protected minorities, and of upholding a widespread system of public corruption and social favoritism.
Due to Hungary’s violations of the rule-of-law and politics criteria and its failure to address shortcomings in judicial independence, the European Union has withheld billions in funding from the country.
