A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday, approximately 130 miles ( 209 kilometers ) south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands, at a depth of about 10 kilometers ( 6 miles ), according to the US Geological Survey.
The collapse occurred at 6: 23 p local time.
Following the earthquake, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami warning.

Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are both being issued wave alerts, according to the US National Tsunami Warning Center, but there is no storm alert for the US island.
As of now, there are no quick reports of injury or fatalities. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have cautioned residents in coastal areas to stay alert and adopt any formal instructions.
The Cayman Islands authorities issued a storm threat sensitive and advised “residents living close to the coastline” to walk inland. Also, Honduran officials have asked people to stay away from coastlines as a protection.
Locations in Haiti, Belize, and the Bahamas are still in danger of becoming a wave, according to the New York Post. However, an advisory has been issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Also, the International Tsunami Information Center warned that “hazardous wave waves” may affect many coastal areas within the next three hours, including Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, Turks and Caicos, San Andres Providence, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao and the British Virgin Islands.
The disastrous 1843 Guadeloupe disaster, which had an estimated scale of 8.5 and caused significant damage and loss of life in the Caribbean, occurred on the same time, February 8.
