U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, were present at a work fair at Duke University late last month, making” some kids” concerned about” the convenience and perceived safety of illegal group people.”
Mi Gente, Duke Africa, Duke Students for Justice in Palestine, and Duke Muslim Students Association all supported Duke Beyond Borders ‘ statement opposing ICE’s appearance at the OneDuke All Industry Career Fair, according to The Chronicle.
” Allowing ICE on campus is ]… ] an utter contradiction of Duke’s values”, the Beyond Borders statement read. It also alleged ICE ethnically profiles people, “detains” U. S. residents, and “denies individuals ‘ rights to a good test”.
Beyond Borders more called the school’s decision to allow the ICE employers on school “disappointing” and a” cultural assault against our humanity”.
Senior Ana Young and second Susannah Braswell both expressed concern for the safety of the students and the Duke personnel, and that being around ICE was “incredibly frightening for a lot of the unauthorized students.”
Some individuals at the fair received booklets urging them to “avoid and accept for the well-being of our areas at Duke and over,” including those from the U.S. Navy and the North Carolina Department. of Public Safety’s Division of Juvenile Justice.
The Chronicle reports that the university “welcomes programs from unauthorized and DACA learners” and “uses the same “need-blind” procedure as applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.”
According to Duke’s website, students who are undocumented in the country “deal with academic, social, and psychological problems unique to their condition.” As such, learning consultants, a gaze tutoring software, and sources for ADHD — Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder — are available to them.
The Chronicle notes ICE has a 54 cent unfavorability rating among the American people, however, that number is from a 2019 surveys. According to an Economist/YouGov study conducted at the beginning of this month, 53 % of people view Immigration and Customs Enforcement strongly.
