According to police and eyewitness accounts, a group of monastery students protested the display of books by exiled Bangladeshi artist Taslima Nasreen at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka on Monday.
The event occurred at the barn of Sabyasachi Publication, which publishes Nasreen’s books. A group of people approached the barn, according to witness, and inquired as to why Nasreen’s books were being displayed.
” A group of provocateurs came to Sabyasachi Prakashani and began yelling at the barn about Taslima Nasreen’s ebooks. Eventually, Publisher Shatabdi Bhava was attacked, and the novels were thrown aside”, an witness said.
Police intervened, bringing the situation under control. Extra police were called in after being informed of the commotion. According to police national Masud Alam, the despair was brought on by tensions between some students of the Qaumi Madrasa and the publisher.
We have brought both parties to the police stop to look into the source of the conflicts. The condition is now fully under control”, he added.
On social press, allegedly circulating films that depict the invasion have become popular. Taslima Nasreen shared one such video on X ( formerly Twitter ), condemning the incident.
” Now, jihadist religious fanatics attacked the barn of publication Sabyasachi at Bangladesh’s text good. Their ‘ murder’ was publishing my book”, she wrote.
Nasreen further claimed that despite the attackers continuing to vandalize the barn, guide good authorities and local police had ordered the removal of her reserve. ” The government is supporting these fanatics, and jihadist actions are spreading across the country”, she added.
Taslima Nasreen is a Bangladeshi author, doctors, and liberal activist now living in exile in India.
The Amar Ekushey Book Fair, organized annually in February by the Bangla Academy, commemorates the sacrifices made on February 21, 1952, when protesters in then-East Pakistan ( now Bangladesh ) laid down their lives to establish Bangla as the state language. One of the largest guide fair in South Asia, which features books from a range of styles and subjects, is held at the Bangla Academy yard and the ancient Suhrawardy Udyan.
