JUBA: Due to a government change that saw the treatment of several top authorities this week, South Sudan’s assistant president has threatened to withdraw from a fragile peace deal with the president.
Riek Machar, whose social conflict with Salva Kiir has in the past sparked a civil war, said in a speech on Wednesday that he will “walk out of the deal” signed in 2018 if two of the officers fired by Kiir are no reinstated within 24 hrs. Yolanda Awel Deng, the governor of Eastern Equatoria state, and Alfred Futuyo Karaba, the governor of the state, are the two leaders.
The detective main and two other vice presidents have been fired, along with other leaders.
Machar claimed that the rejections were in violation of the 2018 power-sharing partnership, which led to his return to Juba, the money, as the country’s first sin leader. His side” did never tolerate continued violations of the peace agreement,” according to his statement.
There was no immediate opinion by Kiir or his state.
South Sudan has five vice president, according to the 2018 deal, which ended five years of civil war and was reached with the help of the US and another.
When South Sudan, a country rich in oil, gained freedom from Sudan in 2011, there were great hope for peace and stability. However, when forces loyal to Kiir began to fight those devoted to Machar, the country sagged into civil conflict in December 2013 mainly due to racial divisions.
The 2018 harmony deal is yet to be fully implemented. The president’s failure to adopt promised reforms, such as completing the unity of the military command, is one of the challenges. Presidential elections, frequently postponed, are then scheduled for 2026.
Prior to this time, UN experts warned that the security of South Sudan was in danger due to unanticipated deadlines and political chaos on crucial unity government issues.
